278 BCE – The Tragic Sacrifice of Qu Yuan
In the Miluo River the people of Chu floated boats while searching for the missing Qu Yuan whose death brought the river to a state of mourning. This respected minister received exile after he had warned about corruption. His kingdom’s demise became known to him while he was in exile which led to deep despair. At the river bank he surrendered to the currents of water.
The people onboard the boats raced frantically toward Qu Yuan while using drums to frighten away ghosts and dropping rice to prevent fish from eating his body. Through their mourning the people created a lasting tradition known as the Dragon Boat Festival even though they could not rescue Qu Yuan.
