Bay Area Dragon Boat Novice Race
Scheduled for June 7, 2025, at Leo J. Ryan Park, the 15th Annual Bay Area Dragon Boat Novice Race is designed for individuals and teams new to the sport. Hosted by the Bay Area Dragons (BAD), this event is aimed at beginners who want to experience dragon boating while enjoying fun, fitness, and camaraderie.
Event Highlights
Team Makeup:
Teams consist of 20 paddlers, with a maximum of 10 male paddlers allowed in any race. Some teams include up to four backup paddlers. To maintain the novice spirit, teams may only include one experienced paddler (defined as someone who has paddled for at least one year in any water sport).
Race Format:
The 200-meter course is typically completed in under two minutes. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of three races.
Practices:
Teams are offered up to two free coached practices before race day to help participants become familiar with dragon boat festival and develop teamwork.
Gear:
All necessary equipment, including paddles and life jackets, is provided. Certified steerspersons and drummers are available upon request.
Registration Fees:
- Early Bird: $1,200 (available until March 15, 2025)
- Regular: $1,400 (March 16 – April 15, 2025, or until the race grid is full)
BAD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all registration fees are tax-deductible.
Bay Area Dragon Boating Competition — Sprints
For more experienced teams seeking a competitive challenge, the San Francisco Bay Area Dragon Boat Competitive Sprints deliver a high-energy racing experience.
