Must-Try Dragon Boat Festival Foods: A Guide to Traditional Delicacies

The Dragon Boat Festival is here, and it is time for family and Dragon Boat Festival food and traditions! Unique culinary experience during this festival, one of the most popular festivals celebrated all over East Asia, with a wealth of history and folklore. So, gear up to tantalize your taste buds as we talk about some of the dishes you must try for this important occasion.

Zongzi: The Star of the Show

There is no doubt that zongzi is the most symbolic food of the Dragon Boat Festival. These pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings, wrapped in bamboo leaves, are the undisputed champion of this holiday.

What makes them so special? It’s an endless variety!

  • Savory Zongzi: These filled with savory treasures like pork belly, salted duck egg yolk, mushrooms, peanuts, and Chinese sausage are hearty and satisfying. It’s umami-rich, savory goodness in each and every bite.
  • Sweet Zongzi: For the sweet-toothed, sweet Zongzi stuffed with red bean paste, jujubes (Chinese red dates), or taro are a delicious option. They also provide an excellent counterpoint to savory versions and are just as tasty.
  • Regional Variations: There are countless regional variations, from Cantonese zongzi with mung beans and a whole preserved egg yolk to the more streamlined Hokkien zongzi. In fact, exploring these variations is itself an act of culinary adventuring!

Realgar Wine (Xionghuangjiu): A Protective Potion (Use Responsibly)

The Realgar Wine,  While it is not obviously a food, the Realgar Wine is a traditional beverage served during the Dragon Boat Festival. It’s a Chinese alcoholic beverage infused with realgar, a kind of arsenic sulfide. In ancient times, it was thought to have the power to drive away evil spirits and insects. Note: It is strongly discouraged to consume Realgar wine, and when advised, only in minuscule amounts for various health reasons. Where some drank it, many now drink regular rice wine or other drinks instead.

More Delicious Dragon Boat Festival Food Treats:

In addition to zongzi, several other foods are enjoyed during the festival:

  • Duck: Roasted or braised duck is a more traditional Chinese dish that is used for family get-togethers as well. Its savory taste and juicy meat are the best partners of Zongzi.
  • Garlic Cloves: Hanging garlic cloves over your doorways is a folklore habit that signifies the banishment of evil spirits. Though not consumed, they are a significant part of the celebration.
  • Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables: Taking seasonal fruits and vegetables too is another common practice about this time to ensure health and well-being just before summer.

Not But A Farewell: A Festival of Food, Culture, and Community
